Pride & Prejudice
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."
Opening Line of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Hey loves!
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books. I do not remember how I got my hands on this book, but I remember that I loved reading it. I read it for the first time back when I was still living in Germany and I recently re-read it.
In case you do not know the plot: In the Georgian era, the Bennet family faces the challenge of ensuring that at least one of their five daughters marries rich because none of the five daughters can inherit the family's fortune. The heir of the fortune is Mr. Collins who arrives in town to marry one of the Bennet girls. But around the same time, two rich gentlemen arrive in town: The kind Mr. Bingley and the even richer Mr. Darcy who is characterised by his pride. One of the Bennet sisters, Jane, falls for Mr. Bingley and Elizabeth, another Bennet sister, starts to be interested in Mr. Darcy but Darcy's pride stands between them. And Mr. Collins intends to propose to Elizabeth who has no intention of accepting his proposal.
The combination of all these different events makes the book so interesting and one of the things I loved about the book was Austen's realistic depiction of their lives. There are so many side-stories and sets that make it easier for the reader to believe their lives to be real. The plot of the book does, however, evolve slowly and I would recommend to read the book over a longer period of time because it has some quite long-wided parts while others are very exciting. I usually read a little bit in it before I went to sleep.
As a fan of romance novels, this book was definitely for me. The historical context of the book made me be even more attracted to it because I love reading about past times and imaging what life was like under different circumstances with different principles. So if you like books that fall into these categories, this one is definitely for you.
I think the book is a good read in the time leading up to Christmas because it lets you dive into the world of the Bennet sisters and forget all the stress that surrounds Christmas. The book is also humorously written and will usually put a smile on your face.
I hope that some of you will give this classic book a read! If you read it, I would love to hear whether you liked it!
Lots of Love,
Elena
